Delta plans to offer increased choice on 14 new international routes* – including nine destinations not served by any other U.S. major airline from JFK – and will offer customers improved on-time reliability by reducing the number of Delta flights operating during peak hours.

The efficiencies of the new schedule will allow Delta to offer customers a total of 204 daily departures to 93 destinations from New York-JFK by June 2008, including:

Nine new trans-Atlantic routes with nonstop service between JFK and: Tel Aviv, Israel (effective March 10)*; Edinburgh, Scotland (effective May 1); Dakar, Senegal (effective June 2)*; Nairobi, Kenya (via Dakar) (effective June 2)*; Cairo, Egypt (effective June 4)*; Malaga, Spain (effective June 4)*; Amman, Jordan (effective June 5)*; and Lagos, Nigeria (effective June 9)*; and, subject to DOT approval, Cape Town, South Africa (via Dakar) (effective June 3)*. we will further demonstrate our commitment to diversifying the choices we offer our customers by redeploying domestic assets to international markets where demand is outpacing growth,” said Delta CEO Richard Anderson. “Our expansion in New York will build on the value Delta customers already enjoy with daily nonstop service to five continents from JFK, but will also meet this growing demand with a strategic plan to help alleviate chronic delays and congestion before another peak-summer travel season.

“As New York City’s most international carrier, we are proud to take a leadership position in redesigning our JFK schedule to allow for significant growth of international routes while helping to reduce congestion at peak times by more evenly scheduling Delta flights throughout the day,” Anderson continued.

Reducing congestion and delays
As part of its plan to address congestion and delays at JFK, Delta will make the following changes before summer 2008:

Metering its use of airport resources by reducing average hourly departures by 6 percent during the most congested hours;
Decreasing departures during JFK’s afternoon ‘rush hour’ by shifting short-haul trans-Atlantic flights to a third bank of international departures after 7 p.m.;
Optimizing connecting times to increase transit time for JFK customers to enhance overall baggage performance and schedule reliability;
Increasing the number of Delta flights operated with larger two-class jets. Of the 204 daily departures at JFK planned for 2008, 65 percent will be operated with larger two-class aircraft seating between 70 and 270 passengers – up from 43 percent in summer 2007; and

Air France partnered with Delta on Trans-Atlantic flights

Air France and Delta airlines partnered to share revenues and costs on their trans-Atlantic routes. The agreement will expand the two airlines’ existing immunized partnership that has delivered new routes and choices to customers on both sides of the Atlantic since its inception in the late 1990s.

The first phase begin April 2008 and include all non-stop flights operated by Air France and Delta between Air France’s Paris-CDG, Orly, and Lyon hubs, and Delta’s Atlanta, New York – JFK, Cincinnati and Salt Lake City hubs. It will also include flights operated by both carriers between London-Heathrow and the US. A combined 19 daily flights and more than 4,500 seats per day – a 45% increase – are expected to be part of the first phase of implementation.

By 2010, the agreement will be extended to all trans-Atlantic flights operated by Air France and Delta between Europe and the Mediterranean on one side and North America on the other side, as well as all flights between Los Angeles and Tahiti.

many transatlantic flights operated by Air France and Delta between Europe and the US will be sold on a code-share basis.

First phase benefits of the joint venture partnership will include:

The entry of the Joint Venture into the world’s most competitive business market as Delta begins serving London Heathrow using three of Air France’s slots at that airport with:
a London-Heathrow/Los Angeles flight operated by Air France
two London-Heathrow/New York JFK flights operated by Delta
a London-Heathrow/Atlanta flight operated by Delta

Increased growth opportunities resulting from the combined efforts of Air France’s and Delta’s respective sales teams with more access to more flights
Increased travel options for passengers, including more flights, better schedules, more discounted seats and more frequent flyer upgrade and mileage redemption opportunities than ever before.
“The launch of this joint venture marks a turning point in our partnership with Delta,” stated Jean-Cyril Spinetta, Chairman and CEO of Air France KLM Group. “Our long-standing cooperation paves the way for some particularly interesting opportunities. The joint venture has an initial term through March 31, 2016 and will renew for subsequent periods of three years with effect from this date.

On June 28, Air France, KLM, Delta, Northwest, Alitalia and CSA Czech Airlines filed for expanded antitrust immunity with the U.S. Department of Transportation. Egyptair to add Cairo Delhi flights

in order to attract more tourists from India, Egyptian authorities are planning to raise the number of flights between the two countries by the end of this year
At present, there are three flights between Egypt and India and the plan is to increase it to seven each week.
At present, only Egypt Air is operating flights between the two countries, flying thrice a week from Mumbai.

"We are planning to start operations of the rest of the four flights. Though we hope to start all the four, at least new Delhi to Cairo, we expect to start this year," Egyptian Ambassador to India Mohamed Higazy said.

He said the country expects to almost double the number of Indian tourists visiting Egypt to around 1.5 lakhs by the end of this year.

As part of its plan for more tourists, it is looking at adding flights, including flights from Cairo to Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
Higazy said discussions are on with private airlines like Jet Airways, Kingfisher and Air India for the service.

"India is our top agenda and as we try to build cultural ties between the two nations, we expect more Indians to visit Egypt. Our aim is to double the number to around 1.5 lakhs by this year," he said.

Egyptair decrease Cairo yemen flights

Egyptair has decided to decrease flights between Cairo and Sanaa airport, Yemen from seven to just four times weekly.

An official from the Egyptian carrier said that the cuts are due to low occupancy rates on to-and-from flights through the Yemeni capital. He denied receiving any requests from Yemeni officials regarding the matter.

According to the official, Egyptair had planned to increase the number of flights between the two capitals to 10 weekly trips during the summer; however, political turbulences prevented this from materialising.

From its side, Yemenia Airways merged its trips between Cairo, Frankfurt and Sanaa into one.
Flights to Sanaa airport have been suspended and diverted to the southern city of Aden, an aviation official told AFP as fighting raged between armed tribesmen and security forces in the capital.
"All flights have been diverted to Aden airport," said the official who requested anonymity. The decision came as heavy fighting gripped Al-Hasaba neighbourhood, 10 kilometres (six miles) south of the airport.

Bahrain Air resume flights to Lebanon

Bahrain has resumed flights to Lebanon which it suspended for over two months after the Iranian-backed Shiite group Hezbollah backed anti-government protests led mostly by the Gulf kingdom's majority Shi'ites.

The head of budget airline Bahrain Air's Lebanon office said it would resume flights to Beirut from June 22, with five flights a week. State-run Gulf Air also announced a resumption of flights to Lebanon, an airport source said.
Gulf Air's flights to Iran and Iraq, which were suspended in late March, have not been resumed.
The suspensions highlighted growing tensions in the world's largest oil-exporting region between Sunni-ruled Arab countries and non-Arab Shi'ite power Iran, just across Gulf waters.
Lebanon's Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah had criticised Arab states for backing Bahrain's Sunni rulers, who called in troops from Sunni-led Gulf neighbours to help them quell protests by mainly Shi'ite protesters.

Bahrain's crackdown, which saw it ban protests and impose martial law, has stunned majority Shi'ites and angered Iran, which supports Sh'ite groups in Lebanon and Iraq. Bahrain withdrew its top diplomats from Iran in protest at the Islamic Republic's criticism of its actions.
Shi'ite clerics and political leaders in Iraq have denounced the deployment of troops from Sunni-led Gulf states in Bahrain.

More than 60 percent of Bahrainis are Shi'ites and most are campaigning for a constitutional monarchy. But calls by hardliners for the overthrow of the monarchy have alarmed Sunnis, who say the unrest serves Iran.
