I was wondering if it is possible to purchase united or delta airlines coach ticket through websites such as expedia or travelocity and then use frequent flyer miles to upgrade to first class or business class seat
You need to check several things. Look at the airlines website and determine what booking class of ticket they will accept for mileage upgrades. Some fare code can't be upgraded. Then verify what class of ticker you will be getting from the website, ie travelocity. Usually these tickets are not upgradeable, nor do you usually get FF miles.and in fact many of them won't even let you add your membership number for credits. That can usually be fixed when you check in and have the airline add the number. Before booking on expedia check with american airlines, quite often the price is almost identical on expedia versus the actual airline to fly. I always book thru the airline website because the price is usually no more than 20$ difference. Then you usually get bonus miles for booking on their site.
If you just insist on booking with expedia then you may have to call airlines after booking to make sure your aa number gets put on for this ticket. But I'm not sure if you can then upgrade.
