Foreigners eye Chengdu one of the best in China:poll

A recent survey by leading consultancy organizations shows that Chengdu holds the third place among the major cities in the Chinese mainland on the rankings of
their global images.
The survey, called Research on Chinese Cities Global Image, was co-conducted by Gallup and Fudan University and involved Chinas leading news media and research
institutions. The result of the survey was announced at a press conference on Aug 30, 2010 in Shanghai. This research was launched in April and is aimed at learning how foreigners think about China and how to enhance Chinese cities global image.
Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Xian, Changsha, Kunming and Changchun are selected as the top ten (Chengdu and Nanjing tie for third), with Chengdu as the sole candidate in western China.
The evaluation system of the survey relates to 12 indicators such as city culture, city environment, investment value, individual character, transportation and development potential. Respondents in this research come from more than 100 countries, across six continents, totaling approximately 7, 980 people.

Foreign banks can conduct RMB business in Chengdu

Two years after China's accession to the World Trade Organization, foreign banks will finally be able to conduct renminbi business with Chinese enterprises, a key weapon to enhance their competitiveness in the Chinese market.
The China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) announced on its website Thursday that starting from December 1, foreign banks can provide renminbi services to Chinese enterprises in cities that have already opened up the local-currency business.
Another four cities - Ji'nan, Fuzhou, Chengdu and Chongqing - will be added to the list on the same date, bringing the total number of such cities to 13, though foreign banks still have to apply for licenses in each city.
China had promised to allow foreign banks to do renminbi business with domestic enterprises two years after it became a member of the global trade body; and to remove all geographical and customer restrictions in five years.
Liu Mingkang, chairman of CBRC, said in August that the Chinese authorities would grant equal treatment to foreign banks in the future.
Besides setting up branches and applying for renminbi licenses, foreign banks are also encouraged to buy shares in domestic banks, which helps them enter the Chinese market indirectly.
At the end of July, foreign banks had set up 211 representative offices and 151 branches but they controlled only a small ratio of the domestic banking market.

ancient towns and villages of eastern Zhejiang|china travel

Thin drizzle shrouds Jingxing Rock in a mist, creating a dream-like scene, in Xianju county, Zhejiang province.[China Daily]

The ancient towns and villages of eastern Zhejiang and its picturesque scenery have been the location of many films.

Eastern Zhejiang province is one of the most romantic regions of China. The idyllic corridor between the ocean and mountains has inspired legions of moviemakers, drawn to its natural beauty and picture postcard towns.

Shipu Fishing Port

The classic black-and-white movie Song of the Fisherman, shot in Shipu, 1933, made the port famous.

It's a colorful place, as exemplified by the traditional fishing boats that are lacquered in black and white and gaudy bars of green and red. The green on the bow is said to look like an eyebrow, hence the colloquial name of the distinctive boats from the town: "green eyebrows".

Hu Gencai, from a long line of boatmakers and who owns a boat modeling shop in the town, says the boats have three masts, which enable them to move in any direction, whatever way the wind blows.

Even though he has retired, Hu still makes model boats and a 1-meter long model takes about 20 days for him to complete.

Tradition is a strong facet of Shipu life and married women still wash fishing lights at Mid-River Temple, while grandmothers gather at City God Temple to fold shoe-shaped paper ingots; and plants grow in trumpet shells outside houses.

Shipu has a quiet pace of life and typical activities include drinking a glass of grass jelly while listening to stories told by the elderly, watching opera at the Temple of Lord Guan, and eating seafood on street corners.

If you go

Shipu county is 149 km from Ningbo

and there are regular buses between the towns. There are many hotels and guesthouses in Shipu, while Peninsula Hotel, with seaview rooms, has some of the best facilities.

"Seafood Street" in the center of the town is a popular destination for a marine life meal, while the fishermen's canteens in Dongmen fishing village are a lot cheaper. Dongmen is where the movie Song of the Fisherman was shot.

Entrance tickets to Shipu Ancient Town are 60 yuan ($9.15), while the view from Dajin Hill is well worth the trek. Fishing at Yushan and viewing what is called the "stone forest on the sea" at Hua'ao Island are other tourist options.

Shipu has many local festivals, such as Stepping on Sand Beach in spring, the International Fishing Festival in summer, Fishing Season Festival in fall, and the Lantern Festival and Seafood Festival in winter.

Qiantong Ancient Town

In a house in one of Qiantong's quiet lanes is an old-fashioned barber's chair that was used in the movie, The Barber.

The film's release was delayed for one year, after the director Chen Yifei (1946-2005) died, but Qiantong county, called Heshun in the movie, has plenty to recommend itself after 700 years of history.

There's a saying that, "Rich land fosters more talent" and this perfectly describes Qiantong, which has hundreds of first class craftsmen, such as stone and wood engravers, painters, coopers, shoemakers and tailors.

According to Tong's Genealogy, there used to be more than 300 tailors in the village in 1936 and many of them later set up workshops in Shanghai, Ningbo, Taizhou and Wuhan.

As one of the larger towns on the southern reaches of the Yangtze River, Qiantong has thousands of Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties-style houses, ancestral halls, memorial archways and pavilions that are well preserved.

Water is still drawn by families from Bai Rivulet and walking the cobbled roads is like having a foot massage. You will often see students painting besides brooks or in front of an old house.

If time allows, visit Ninghai, 10 km from Qiantong. At the entrance of Longdengqiang Alley, a barbershop that looks similar to the one in the movie is still functioning and has the same old-fashioned type of facilities.

Ninghai Forest Spa and the Grand Canyon of East Zhejiang are also worth visiting.

If you go

Ninghai county is 85 km from Ningbo and 94 km from Shipu. Regular buses ply the route between Ninghai, Ningbo, Shipu and Qiantong.

Highly recommended dishes include tofu, dried bamboo shoots and smelly peanuts at Qiantong Restaurant, in front of Qiantong bus station. Wheat cake, sold on the street by vendors, is also a must-try.

Entrance to Qiantong Ancient Town is 40 yuan, Ninghai Forest Spa is 198 yuan, the Grand Canyon of East Zhejiang is 85 yuan.

Linhai Old Street

Walking along the city walls of Linhai is a great experience, especially in the rain, as swallows fly low and the mist turns the scene into a kind of fairyland.

A walk along the wall can be divided into two sections, the old section, and the new, which passes apartments built in the 1980s.

At the end of the walk you will find Ziyang Old Street in the old town of Linhai. This 1 km long street was the location for the small-budget movie The Sweet Life on Toilet.

You will no longer see the scene from the movie in which people queue up to sit on red-lacquered toilets in front of every household, but the stone memorial archways, old restaurants, barbershops and fortune-telling shops are still here.

There are three old shops that are definitely worth a visit. Established in 1861, Cai Yongli's Beam Scale Shop is the oldest store on the street; Dai's Shoe Shop was the first in Linhai to produce hand-made shoes, and Anletian Restaurant, established in the late Qing Dynasty, is a leisurely place to hang out.

If you go

Linhai is 75 km from Ninghai and is served by regular buses.

Longxing Temple and Tiantai Hill are two other sites worth visiting in Linhai and buses depart every 20 minutes from Linhai to Tiantai, a journey that takes about one hour.

The ticket for Taizhou city walls is 50 yuan, Longxing Temple is 10 yuan, Tiantai Hill is 20 yuan.

Taozhu Ancient Town

Though Taozhu Ancient Town charges entry for tourists it is so laid back here that the guy selling tickets is hard to find as he spends most of his time playing cards and watching TV at a nearby club that used to be an old temple.

The town nestles beside a mountain and is embraced by the city walls and a river. Taking a walk along the city walls is the best way to enjoy the town's sights.

When night falls, a stay at Lang's Old House is a neat experience. It is also the only place providing accommodation in the town.

The owner, Lang Xunlu, often talks about the crew of Gate of the Sea, a TV show that was shot here.

You should definitely go to the market, crowded with vendors, stretching from the west gate to the east gate. Fruit and vegetables, and traditional attire in vivid colors, are on sale.

Listen to the locals bargaining and you will discover that the local dialect is as strange as a foreign language, even to Mandarin speakers.

If you go

Taozhu is 40 km from Linhai and is a stop along the Linhai-Sicha township route.

Lang's Old House is just 40 yuan per person a night, with shared bathroom. (0576-8578-0654).

Jingxing Rock of Xianju

The Forbidden Kingdom features mind-blowing kungfu from Jackie Chan and Jet Li and the dazzling scenery of Xianju county.

There is a lift to Jingxing Rock that is accessed through a cave, after walking along a short mountain road. The rock is perched on top of a 700-meter-high hill.

From this vantage point watching the marshmallow-like clouds floating over the terraced fields and green valleys, it is easy to appreciate why the place is called Xianju, which means "wonderland".

If you go

Xianju is 52 km from Linhai, served by buses every 25 minutes.

Xianju has many attractions, such as the Rapeseed Flower Festival in March and April, Waxberry Festival in June, and Sunflower Festival in August.

Tickets to Jingxing Rock are 48 yuan.

Zhang Zixuan contributed to the story.

Nestled in nature|china travel

Rustic homes in Mogan Mountain of Huzhou, Zhejiang province, offer visitors respite from the trappings of modernity. [China Daily]

Bucolic Huzhou area tempts urbanites with outdoor offerings

Driving up the road to Mogan Mountain south of Huzhou in Zhejiang province, you can easily spot eight red-brick houses that stand out from hundreds of others on the hillside. The sign marking the graveled path that leads to these farmhouses that make up the 395 Village displays colorful images of Chinese workers in the early revolutionary style.

The path is neatly maintained and free of plastic bottles or other travelers' trash that mar the many resorts and retreats in Zhejiang, one of the most highly industrialized provinces in China.

The front yard of the village is also free of the statues and faux rock formations that adorn many public areas throughout the country. The only prominent structure in the small open area is a washbasin that was originally a feed trough for livestock.

Maintaining the rustic feel of the area was the primary objective of Grant Horsfield when he began in 2007 to work on remodeling these farmhouses into bungalows, equipped with modern toilets and kitchens.

"I fell in love with the area on my first visit that year and made up my mind to build a holiday resort," says the former management consultant from South Africa.

Together with his wife, Horsfield spent $1 million (727,000 euros), including his own savings and money raised from friends and relatives, to lease eight of the 18 original farmhouses in the village, which got its name from the fact that at one time it was home to only three families of nine people. Now it is a resort complex, renamed Naked Retreat, that can accommodate 50 guests at any one time.

Business has been brisk, Horsfield says. In the peak seasons, usually during the various long vacation breaks such as Labor Day, National Day and Spring Festival, bookings of one to two months in advance are needed.

More than 10,000 travelers have stayed at the resort since its opening in late 2007. The occupation rate increased to about 50 percent in 2010 with a gross operating profit of more than 30 percent, which is high compared to other resorts located at even the most popular tourist sights in China.

Nearly 90 percent of the guests have been expatriates from neighboring Shanghai during the first two years. But its popularity has been growing among young Chinese tourists.

The amenities of Naked Retreat can seem bare. Operators consider air conditioning harmful to the environment and it is therefore banned. Instead, all bungalows are furnished with ceiling fans to keep guests cool in the summer. The furniture is largely made of recycled materials and all the household fabrics are of cotton.

"We want to make nature accessible to urbanites from metropolises like Shanghai. It will help them get relaxed, refreshed and hopefully, take up an eco-friendly lifestyle," Horsfield says.

But enjoying the privilege of spending time in this nature resort does not come cheap. The average charge ranges from 500 yuan to 750 yuan per person per day, depending on seasons, with a country style breakfast included. Lunch and dinner can be ordered from the resident ayis, who are recruited from the people living in neighboring villages and prepare both western and local nong jia cai (local style Chinese food).

Laced with soothing streams and blanketed in evergreen trees and bamboo, Mogan Mountain used to be one of the favorite summer resorts for royal guests and rich people, who were mostly foreigners, in Shanghai in the early 20th century to while away the summer heat and humidity. Sprawling villas, varying in style from medieval castles to countryside houses and equipped with facilities like tennis courts, dancing floors and even swimming pools, were built by these wealthy Westerners to create a paradise in the East for themselves.

But with the awakening of the lucrative Chinese tourism market in the past decade, Mogan Mountain is making a comeback, thanks to its tranquil scenery, offers of adventurous hikes and most important of all, proximity to big cities like Shanghai and Hangzhou in Zhejiang province.

During the first nine months in 2010, 1.38 million people visited Mogan Mountain, an increase of 31.3 percent over the previous year, and generated 67 million yuan of revenue, up 34.2 percent from 2009, according to the figures provided by the tourism department of Deqing county, where Mogan Mountain is located.

"Basically, Mogan Mountain has become an all-year-round quintessential retreat for urbanites," says Ji Huibin, vice-director of the communication department of Deqing county.

"Some city people flock to Mogan Mountain in the winter months simply to see the snow," he says.

Such enthusiasm has lured thousands of local farmers - who have emptied their life savings to have their houses refurbished and modernized only to find they are living all by themselves - to thrive in the growing business of tourism industry, or "agritainment" industry, as they themselves put it.

What they have been doing is simple and low budget: Sparing a few bedrooms left by their offspring who have moved to bigger cities to make more money, and sharing some of their home-cooked meals made from their plants and fowl as well as charging each guest 100 yuan or so a night for accommodation. The countryside meals are charged separately.

The county government estimates that there have been nearly 1,500 beds provided by 108 agritainment-running families at Mogan Mountain. More than 1,200 people, mostly local farmers, are working in the business, accounting for 10 percent of the population of the mountainous area that covers less than 100 square kilometers.

The numbers do not include part-time agritainment families who have a regular job in town but are more than willing to open their doors and make some pocket money when their neighbors are overloaded with visitors during holidays.

"It's been a very competitive market so far, since everyone has seen the huge profit margin and wants to gain some benefit. Some families have bought a car to provide pick-up services, while others are offering performances to find their niche in the market," Ji says.

But for Horsfield and his Naked Retreats seems to have already found one.

Horsfield declines to disclose more concrete financial information but he says that the business has been "very satisfactory" and the profit is increasing every year, "which has allowed us to keep growing rapidly".

"Operational cost is rather low here, compared with bigger chain hotels," says Richard Johnston, the general manager of the resort who has been managing various types of hotels around the world for 24 years.

"We don't have big expenses like lifting, central air conditioning, or room services around the clock. We want to make it into a big family and eco-friendly," Johnston says.

But Horsfield and his wife are looking beyond managing a family resort. They plan to open another three resorts in some of the best locations in China to expand their green business.

The newest one, Naked Stable, which is a 20-minute car ride from the village, will be a more high-end complex with facilities like horse-riding and conference rooms. It cost 200 million yuan to build and decorate, and is expected to be open for business in October this year. The other two are expected to be located in Shangri-La in Yunnan province and Zhoushan Islands in Zhejiang.

British Airways Cargo flights to Stansted airport

Just weeks after Stansted received Code F status to handle Boeing's new generation 747-8 aircraft, British Airways World Cargo has announced three of its new fleet will be based at London Stansted, operating schedules to destinations such as Hong Kong, Atlanta, Houston and Shanghai.
Steve Gunning, Managing Director of British Airways World Cargo says: "Our investment in the new Boeing 747-8 reinforces our commitment to the air cargo industry and demonstrates the importance British Airways places on cargo. While our decision to operate on the same schedule also reiterates our commitment to Stansted and its recent Code F status is a significant boost to the operational capacity of the airport.
"We're delighted British Airways World Cargo has selected Stansted as the UK base from which three of its new generation 747-8 will operate," said Nick Barton, Commercial and Development Director for London Stansted Airport.

"The new fleet will be delivered in traditional British Airways colours and we understand the first aircraft will touchdown early next year.

"Obtaining Code F status was vital to opening the doors for next generation aircraft to operate at Stansted and we're delighted with this announcement which is already sparking interest from other carriers.

"This is great news for Stansted and we look forward to welcoming the eagerly awaited 747-8 aircraft when it touches down early next year."
"In addition, the increased range, noise reduction and environmental benefits that the 747-8 provides will significantly benefit our customers. Long-haul freighters and our freighter hub at Stansted form an integral part of our overall business strategy - providing flexibility and capacity on resilient and growing lanes - as we strive for continued excellence in all key areas of the business, including product range, customer service and, of course, network offering.

AirAsia X connections to Bali from Stansted

As the school summer holidays end and thoughts turn to winter escapes, Stansted is gearing up with new ski links, additional winter sun destinations and new flights to the African Continent.

AirAsia X connection service to Australia and New Zealand
AirAsia has added its FLY-THRU service on long haul flights from London Stansted to Australia (Perth and Melbourne) and New Zealand (Christchurch). The airline has also started adding the transfer service to its short haul network, meaning guests can now book a flight from London Stansted to Bangkok, Bali or Singapore on one itinerary.

"AirAsia X's onward connections to Bali, Phuket, Perth and Brisbane will be popular once again with those looking to escape the cold British winter, and we're delighted The Gambia and Cape Verde join our route network, connecting Stansted to these tropical retreats in just six hours flying time."

Ryanair will bring Bulgaria's increasingly popular Bansko ski region closer to home in November with new flights to Plovdiv, and Air Berlin will launch services to Salzburg in December, landing passengers on the doorstep of some of Austria's best Alpine ski resorts.

easyJet are also heating things up with increased frequencies to Alicante, Bilbao and Nice this winter, and December will welcome the start of Serenity Holidays new services to The Gambia and Cape Verde.

"Despite the difficult economic climate, it's encouraging to see our airline partners introducing new routes and extra flights, giving passengers even greater choice when deciding where they might want to head away to this winter," said Nick Barton, Commercial and Development Director at London Stansted Airport.

London Stansted Airport waste management strategy

London Stansted Airport has published its five year waste management strategy - with a three 'R' focus to ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle’ - and ambitious targets to send 0% of waste direct to landfill and recycle 60% by 2015.

“Recycling targets are also being incorporated into third party contracts and in a bid to maintain momentum and focus we request monthly updates on performance. This approach has proven very successful with our cleaning contractors for example remaining ahead of target so far this year**. We also offer discounted waste collection services for recyclable items, thereby incentivising companies to separate waste.
Commenting on the waste strategy, Dr Andy Jefferson, Head of Health Safety and Environment said:

“This strategy outlines the collaborative approach we’ll take to identify even the smallest of initiatives that will collectively improve performance.

“So far we’ve collected over 4,900* tonnes of waste this year and recycled and composted an impressive 52%. But with over 10,000 people working here we can also play our part to support domestic recycling.

“In 2009 for example, we hosted recycling banks in our staff car park for Uttlesford District Council, with over 2 tonnes of textiles and 5 tonnes of glass collected.

“We’re fully committed to the strategy now set and look forward to reporting back on our successes as we work towards the challenging 2015 targets set.”

Initiatives in recent years to tackle waste management at London Stansted Airport include:

Introduced re-cycling bins in terminal buildings and general staff areas.
Reused construction waste. For example, crushed concrete from taxiway repairs were used for the foundations of a Hangar rebuilt in 2009.
Planings from runway resurfacing works in 2006 used to improve road surfaces and create new cycle and footpaths within the airport boundary.
Composted waste from landscaping work. In 2009, nearly 700 tonnes of green waste was composted - not only reducing waste to landfill but savings costs on fertiliser.
Actions set within the Waste Management Strategy 2010-2015 include:

Review waste generated from packaging (i.e. prepared foods, stock deliveries etc) and identify opportunities to change to recyclable products.
Identify opportunities to collaborate with national and local waste recycling programmes and commercial ventures.
Continue roll out of our food composting initiative – which between May and October 2010 has diverted 128 tonnes of food waste from landfill.

Spar store opens at Stansted Airport

SPAR, the UK’s leading convenience chain, has opened its latest outlet at Stansted Airport. The new store, located in international arrivals in the main terminal building, opened on Thursday and is the first in a BAA airport.
“We’re seeing a strong retail performance at Stansted, contrary to the current High Street trend,” said John English, Stansted’s Head of Retail. “By mid October all our units will be let and many of our retailers are reporting better trading here than at their High Street stores.”
In a prime landside location between Moneycorp and W H Smith, SPAR is ideally placed for returning passengers to stock up with essentials before leaving the airport. As a strong brand in Europe it will also be a familiar sight for arriving international passengers.

The store completes the upgrade of the arrivals area and further strengthens the already successful retail mix at the airport.

The company has a strong commitment to the environment and local sourcing. Airport staff can also look forward to somewhere new to shop for mealtime refreshments as, along with ready meals, fruit and vegetables, SPAR also sells fresh coffee, hot drinks, and a selection of sandwiches and snacks and will be open for business 24 hours a day.

Nick Barton, Stansted’s Commercial and Development Director officially opened the new store on Thursday morning, assisted by SPAR’s Retail Operations Director, Stuart Adkin

MAS B737-800 inaugural flight to Kota Kinabalu

Some 160 guests and MAS’ senior management team were the first to fly on Malaysia Airlines’ new B737-800 which departed for Kota Kinabalu today.

The national carrier is the first full service airline in the world to operate the B737-800 with the new Boeing Sky Interior.

The 160-seater aircraft sports a new dynamic livery with red and blue lines, Malaysia Airlines' corporate colours.

He said, "The dynamic livery epitomises our determined spirit to provide Malaysian Hospitality to our guests.

“When deciding on the new livery, we considered a number of designs including those that were similar to our very popular hibiscus and heliconia designs. However, these designs added a significant amount of weight to the aircraft, which would not have been very environmentally responsible. Therefore, we went for a cleaner design that is more flowing and environmentally friendly.

"We will receive 3 B737-800 this year, and our first A330-300 next year. These are exciting times for Malaysia Airlines and our customers who will enjoy the latest generation aircraft."

Asian Airline Industry As Number One

Asian airlines, already the best in the world in terms of service level, are forging ahead on the back of the continent's growth which would make the civil aviation industry a formidable part of the rise of Asia, according to Malaysia Airlines Chairman Tan Sri Dr. Munir Majid.

Dr. Munir said this at the China Daily Asia Leadership Roundtable attended by political, business and academic leaders in Asia at the inaugural ceremony in Hong Kong today. "The base figures and trends," he said, "point clearly to a new dominance reflective of the wider global shift that is taking place today."

Dr. Munir also pointed out Asia is starting out from a low base. With 10 times the US population size, if Asia was seen as a domestic market its passenger size was only 1.2 times that of the US. In terms of international travel, while twice the 79 million of the US, this was still behind Europe's 3.8 times. Indeed overall only 10 per cent of Asia's population travel "domestically" (US:91 per cent; Europe:21 per cent) while international travel is limited to 4 per cent of the population (US 22 and Europe 41 per cent).

"On the other hand," Dr. Munir said, "it is emerging that Asia has a high propensity to spend. Figures from Airbus (Global Insight, October 2009) extrapolate for the period 2009-2014 real consumer spending growth of close to and over 8 per cent against projected GDP growth of 8 and 10 per cent respectively."

Already on the number of seats per annum basis, 9 of the top 20 airports in the world are in Asia. China alone has 158 airports and plans to build 86 more. There are also more wide-body aircraft operated by Asian airlines, and 50 per cent of global wide-body deliveries up to the end of 2012 will be made to them.

While it is all-systems-go for the airline industry in Asia, Dr. Munir warned of the still uncertain global political economy, which could move in unhealthy directions whether or not driven by geopolitical considerations. There were also industry-specific challenges.

Dr. Munir wanted to see no let-up in safety standards as well as environmental standards and further opening up of markets. The industry, he reminded the audience, was volatile and highly competitive. Management cannot afford to let its guard down and there was plenty of room for cooperative arrangements and consolidation. He also pointed to the need to develop civil aircraft manufacturing, with only China presently making any great effort in the region. Another area of business offering a huge opportunity is the MRO (Maintenance, repair and overhaul) business where Asia's cost structure is competitive and talent pool strong. There are vast opportunities as the Asian airline industry forges ahead, Dr. Munir concluded.

Malaysia Airlines and KLM partnership

Malaysia Airlines and KLM are set to investigate closer links with each other, following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Shanghai today.

Azmil said, “This is the first step towards further strengthening our partnership with KLM which has spanned 11 years. It is timely and aligned with our aim towards profitable growth next year. Teaming up with KLM will offer a win-win situation for all as it provides economic benefits for both parties.
As a natural extension of the current and successful relationship which has been in place for the past 11 years, this collaboration marks an important milestone for the two national airlines and will pave way for potential closer co-operation between the airlines. The benefits include greater connectivity, better schedules and more choices for customers.

The document was signed by Malaysia Airlines Managing Director/CEO, Tengku Dato’ Sri Azmil Zahruddin and KLM’s Chief Executive, Peter Hartman.

“Through this, our customers can benefit with greater connectivity, better schedules and enhanced products. With closer links, we will also be able to keep costs down. This will then enable us to pass on the benefits to our customers.

“The MoU with KLM is significant as Malaysia is an ideal transit point for visitors from Australasia and Europe. We hope to be able to sign a definitive agreement soon, so to enable to further increase the passenger numbers from that region not only to Malaysia but to our destinations in Australasia,” he said.

Commenting on the signing, Hartman said, “This MoU will strengthen the connection between the two hubs: Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur.”.

“Moreover, this partnership is an ideal opportunity to expand the number of Australasian destinations we offer our customers. Malaysia Airlines enjoys a deserved reputation for consistent and high quality service, both on the ground and in the air, and so is a natural partner for KLM,” he said.

Both Malaysia Airlines and KLM operate daily Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur flights.

MAS holidays Offer One-Stop Umrah Services

MASholidays, the travel arm of Malaysia Airlines, has teamed pu with the Al-Jaad Group for Umrah & Hajj Services. This is in efforts to expand and capture the fast growing umrah business.
“With this partnership with Al-Jaad, our Lambaian Kaabah packages will become a one stop centre for customers who are travelling for umrah and ziarah. Most importantly, our customers will be assured of much more competitive and higher quality products,” he said.
MASholidays wide range of umrah packages cater to individuals and groups with a choice of economy or business class travel exclusively on Malaysia Airlines.
“MASholidays has been offering umrah products since 1990 under the Lambaian Kaabah umbrella. This is a very important milestone for MASholidays and is in line with our business expansion plan. The umrah business is huge in Malaysia and has been growing steadily over the years. With Al-Jaad as our muassasah partner, we will be a licensed umrah operator. This means we will have the capability to issue umrah visas.

The M&J Aljaad Holding Group is based in Saudi Arabia and has been in operation for the past 25 years. The company’s capabilities include processing of visa applications and ground transfers equipped with the latest tourist facilities. They also offer a good selection of 4-star and 5-star accommodation located close to the holy mosques, operate their own catering which can custom made to Malaysian tastebuds and provide professional tour guides (mutawwif).

Dr. Muwaffag Aljaad said, “We are excited with this partnership with MASholidays. With our proven track record in providing comprehensive, reliable and comfortable ground arrangement for umrah and ziarah, MASholidays customers will be assured of a high quality umrah and ziarah experience.”

“With this partnership we can now be very flexible in our umrah offerings. Customers can choose from our wide range of products from 11 days 9 nights to 14 days 12 nights. We can also tailor the trip according to customer requirements at a very reasonable price. This can start from as low as RM5,600 per person,” Dr. Amin said.
“As East Malaysia is also a potential market for umrah business, we will work with MASwings to tap those markets that Malaysia Airlines does not reach” he added.

air china LAX to PEK increase to double daily

Air China has added second daily flight between Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Beijing beginning Sept. 1,

Air China will use Boeing 747-400 aircraft for the new service, which is expected to double the choices for passengers and creates excellent connections to other important Asian destinations such as India, Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand, the airline officials said.

LAX is the only U.S. airport to offer nonstop service provided by China's three major international air carriers: Air China to Beijing, China Eastern to Shanghai and China Southern to Guangzhou.

"Beijing and beyond will be well served by this new flight, making China's capital city a true global hub," said Zhihang Chi, Air China vice president and general manager for North America.

"Los Angeles and China have enjoyed a partnership of over 150 years based on historical, educational, cultural, business trade and investment, and tourism ties," said Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa.

"I am very proud that Air China's additional nonstop flight between LAX and Beijing will strengthen these long-standing ties with one of the most desirable cities in Asia and the growing markets of China."

China continues to be Los Angeles' largest trading partner, with total two-way trade valued in 2009 at 155.3 billion dollars for the Los Angeles Customs District including the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and LAX, a study released by the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) said.

One average daily, round-trip, transoceanic flight of wide-body aircraft to/from LAX generates 623 million dollars in economic output annually, and sustains 3,120 direct and indirect jobs in Southern California with annual wages of 150 million dollars, Southern California' s premier economic development organization said.

Air China to buy five B747 8 passenger airplanes

Air China signed a formal agreement with Boeing on March 7 to buy five Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental passenger jets, making it the first Chinese buyer for Boeing's newest, fuel efficient intercontinental passenger jet.
Air China, as China's leading air carrier, intends to use this batch of jumbo jets to expand its international routes.

"Depending on its advanced technology, the 747-8 will provide better operating economics, higher efficiency and better environmental performance to support the continued development of Air China. Air China has now become the world's fastest growing and one of the largest airline companies. We are very proud to contribute our power to their success. We also look forward to continuing our long lasting partnership," said Marlin Dailey, sales and marketing vice president of Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

The 747-8 is able to carry 476 passengers with its three-class configuration. It adopted a new wing design and upgraded cockpit. It also adopted the interior features of the 787 Dreamliner, including the arc-type and upward-bending new structure, which can make passengers feel more open and comfortable amid the increase in luggage space.

In addition, the lighting technology also highlights the advantages of this structure as the soft lighting allows passengers to get better rest during the flight.

The Genx-2B engines use the 787 technology, which reduces aircraft noise and emissions. It also possesses unsurpassed fuel economy. Meanwhile, its freight volume will increase by 26 percent.

Beijing to Stockholm daily nonstop flights

Air China will fly between Beijing and Stockholm daily beginning March 30th, the airline says.

Air China is the only direct airline between Beijing and Stockholm.

Yan said that Asia is the largest market for Air China. Many passengers can fly on Air China from Stockholm to Beijing and then from Beijing they can reach many other Asian countries very quickly.

"Air China is increasing its flights from five days a week to every day beginning at the end of the month. This is to meet the increasing demand from passengers," Yan Wenzhong, general manager of Air China's office in Stockholm, told Xinhua.

Yan said the increase in the number of passengers has a lot to do with the rapid development of bilateral relations between China and Sweden in recent years.

"This has greatly stimulated exchanges of people between the two countries," Yan said.

Last year, the passengers travelling between Beijing and Stockholm reached 57,000, 60 percent more than in 2009. So far this year, the number of passengers has also increased rapidly, Yan said.

Air China opened its line between Beijing and Stockholm in August 1988 with only one flight each week. It gradually increased to five flights a week and even extended the flight to Copenhagen from Stockholm for some time.

EVA air double Taiwan China routes

EVA Air and its regional subsidiary UNI Air have initiated code-shared service between Taiwan and China with Air China and its subsidiary Shenzhen Air. Flights started with the winter schedule on Oct. 31, 2010. The arrangement more than doubles the frequency of EVA and UNI flights on eight Taiwan-China routes, making business travel significantly more convenient and giving leisure travelers new options for connecting flights. For many passengers from North America, the added frequency provides more flexibility in planning itineraries.

“Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chongqing and Shenzhen are thriving domestic hubs for China National Aviation Holding Company. Passengers traveling between Taiwan and China now have the advantage of frequent connections to and from 80 major cities in China,” said EVA spokesman K. W. Nieh. “Linked with EVA’s global service system, this far-reaching network in China creates brand-new opportunities for travelers from throughout the world. It also makes trips to China with a stop in Taipei exceptionally attractive. Breaking new ground and extending services for airlines in Taiwan and China, this cooperation holds tremendous benefits for the two aviation groups involved, in addition to what it does for our passengers.”

EVA and UNI Air began interline agreements with Air China, Shenzhen Air and Shandong Air in 1995 so that passengers flying to China with stops in Hong Kong or Macau could through-check luggage and get boarding passes for their onward destinations when they checked in for their first flights. And, as soon as direct flights between Taiwan and China were authorized, EVA and UNI Air ratcheted up levels of cooperation with China National Aviation Holding Company. The existing cooperation foundation establishes a base for the two airline companies to work together on frequent flyer programs and increase passenger conveniences and other services.
