SPAR, the UK’s leading convenience chain, has opened its latest outlet at Stansted Airport. The new store, located in international arrivals in the main terminal building, opened on Thursday and is the first in a BAA airport.
“We’re seeing a strong retail performance at Stansted, contrary to the current High Street trend,” said John English, Stansted’s Head of Retail. “By mid October all our units will be let and many of our retailers are reporting better trading here than at their High Street stores.”
In a prime landside location between Moneycorp and W H Smith, SPAR is ideally placed for returning passengers to stock up with essentials before leaving the airport. As a strong brand in Europe it will also be a familiar sight for arriving international passengers.
The store completes the upgrade of the arrivals area and further strengthens the already successful retail mix at the airport.
SPAR has 2,600 stores across the UK and 16,000 worldwide selling everything from basic grocery and top-up shopping, to chilled beers and wines. The company has a strong commitment to the environment and local sourcing. The new store is equipped with the latest energy efficient refrigeration and motion sensor lighting while all its waste will be returned to the company’s distribution depot for recycling. It has also stopped issuing free carrier bags, reducing usage by 70%.
Airport staff can also look forward to somewhere new to shop for mealtime refreshments as, along with ready meals, fruit and vegetables, SPAR also sells fresh coffee, hot drinks, and a selection of sandwiches and snacks and will be open for business 24 hours a day.
